A note on useful first, beautiful always.

· 3 min read

Two lines sit under most of what Omvato makes. Useful first. Beautiful always. They are short enough to remember and easy to nod along to. This is a note on what they ask of us in practice.

Useful first means the object has to earn its place before it has to look good. Every object we make begins with a job: keep this drink the way you want it, carry this laptop without a bag, find these keys. If the job is not real, the object does not get made. If the job is real, everything else follows from it.

Putting usefulness first also sets the order of decisions. Shape follows the hand. Size follows what the object has to hold. Weight follows where it is carried. Only once these are settled do we ask how the object should feel in a room. Answering the questions in the wrong order produces things that photograph well and disappoint later.

Beautiful always is the second half, and it is not optional. An object can be useful and still be a chore to look at. Most everyday objects are. They are bought because they are needed, tolerated because they work and replaced without regret. We do not want to make those.

Beauty, for us, is not decoration added at the end. It is the result of getting the useful decisions right and then refusing to leave rough edges. Proportion, finish, the way a lid closes, the way a cable sits. These are small things. They are also the difference between an object that is kept and one that is simply owned.

The two lines hold each other in check. Useful first stops us from making things that are only pretty. Beautiful always stops us from making things that are only functional. Objects that satisfy both are rarer than they should be, which is why we keep saying the words.

There is one more reason the principle matters. Most of what we make is given by one person to another. A gift that is useful shows thought. A gift that is beautiful shows care. We would like every Omvato object to show both, whether it is chosen for a desk of one or a team of hundreds.

Objects for everyday life.
